Science Teacher
Irene Garcia Middle School
BACKGROUND: I've been a teacher at La Joya ISD since 2004. I've taught 7th grade ELA, an 8th grade Reading and Writing Connection course and currently, 8th grade science, again. I've been happily married to my wife Fely Garcia (@fely_garcia0207) for 16 years, who I am proud to say is an Apple Distinguished Educator for the Class of 2017, and we have two intelligent and talented boys (15 and 10).

In the past few years, my teaching has evolved drastically. This past school year, I was part of LJISD's Apple Academy, and I can honestly say that my classroom was completely transformed. Although I used to often integrate technology into my lessons, now it's routine and part of my daily instruction. Being a writing teacher allowed me to use tools that facilitate written expression. My students created digital stories, expressed their creativity digitally, collaborated with others in written assignments, and demonstrated problem-solving skills while working to raise awareness on global issues. This past year too, I implemented the SAMR model more than ever. Through analysis of expository texts my students were able to use technology tools to convey their messages and ideas, but most importantly to share with others.
